Deep River
Deep River is a moving collection of 22 spirituals and Southern folk songs.
The African American spiritual constitutes one of the largest and most significant forms of American folksong. In the nineteenth century, the word “spirituals” referred to all these subcategories of folk songs and were often rooted in biblical stories. In the early half of the 20th century, composers such as Harry Burleigh and William Dawson created spiritual repertoire for the concert stage by arranging many of these songs for choirs and orchestras.
